Supertramp
Supertramp at the time had a strict no-camera policy for the audience. The show was at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, a venue that regularly hosted symphonies and plays, a “sit and listen” rather than a dancing “in the isles” kind of place. This of course completely suited Supertramp’s musical style. The album Crime of the Century was riding high on the charts and it was a sold out show.
The concert promoter was a huge Supertramp fan and wanted a performance photo for his office. I was hired ostensibly to do a few “grip and grin” photos backstage before the show and then when the lights went down make my way into a second row seat via the interior stage door enabling me to bypass the ushers and security.
I had a waist level viewfinder on my Hasselblad so I was able to cradle the camera on my lap and focus. With my 150 mm lens I was able to get this shot. The promoter was delighted.
