The Carnival in the town of Limoux, France is the longest of any carnival in the world. It starts in the middle of January and runs every weekend until the end of March. There are three events a day; eleven in the morning, four thirty in the afternoon and ten at night on Saturdays and Sundays. Each day and time has different themes of costumes and meanings, everything from traditional Venetian and Rio to the truly weird. The Sunday morning I was there, one group were dressed as popular storybook characters, Capitan Hook to Pocahontas and the other in the theme of “Barbie” (?). With a band behind them (and in the case of the Barbie group a small brigade pouring the local Blanquette, hence so many more photographs of them) they slowly danced and move around the town square visiting each bar and restaurant, stopping in each for a free drink.
